This drawing is of a small earthenware pot housed in the St. Louis Museum of Art. It was made in Northern Mexico just before Spanish colonization.

I was immediately struck by its adorable googly eyes looking off in opposite directions, as well as the carefully glazed swirls around its middle. As I carefully studied the original to prepare for the drawing, I could easily trace the hand of that early artisan — following the path of the marks made by their brush, from the moment it was dipped in glaze before being slowly depleted after each successive stroke then being dipped again to continue with the pattern.

I wonder if that artisan saw the same humor in its endearing expression as I do. Owls often had a more ominous connotation to the early American cultures, so perhaps not.

This giclée print is printed on rich Somerset Velvet archival paper. The drawing was meticulously created using only dots, carefully built up in layers to recreate the textures of the sculpture. It represents more than 10 hours of careful work, and the print is virtually indistinguishable from the original!
