Chicago Lion in Winter

This graphite, chalk and charcoal drawing is a tribute to my favorite season and one of my favorite museums — the Art Institute of Chicago. I've been there many times in many seasons, but there is something extra-special about seeing the famous bronze lions and museum facade covered in a fresh blanket of snow!

The current museum building was constructed for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and today houses one of the country's largest and most important collections of art. The two-ton bronze African lions by Edward Kemeys that tower over the front steps were added in 1894. They are considered among Chicago's most recognizable icons. My drawing looks up at the south lion, which was described by Kemeys as "the most difficult [sculpture] I have ever attempted."

This giclée print is printed on archival Epson Premium Watercolor paper and is virtually indistinguishable from the original!
